Higher education is evolving to a data-intensive domain, with academic institutions becoming increasingly complex from the point of view of managing and analyzing the digital information, coming from of a variety of activities, either curricular, extra-curricular, administrative or financial. Teachers and students interact with a diversity of educational resources and technologies, which are accessed by both formally enrolled but also informal continuous learners. The present paper investigates big data in the educational context, summarizing technologies, platforms, interesting use cases in regard with other related technologies, also challenges from developing a big data solution. A survey-based research was conducted among teachers and students to investigate the awareness of big data opportunity in a higher vocational university. Finally the paper presents analytical requirements for a VBL web portal as a future work. | Keywords
