This paper highlights the importance of an e-learning approach to developing the engineering students' professional communication competence in English by focusing on grammar in a series of e-learning activities meant to encourage creativity, the logical and thorough argumentation of ideas in a polite, politically correct manner. Acknowledging the fact that especially in the pandemic times, online professional communication including speaking and writing is attached much importance to in a work environment, we claim that the engineering students studying English for specific purposes in a technical university should be helped and encouraged to focus on e-learning in order to develop and practise their knowledge of English grammar and specialized vocabulary for giving effective discourses and for writing specific technical and business documents in a professional, ethical and accurate manner in an online or physical work environment. We attempt to demonstrate that focusing on competency and task-based language teaching, cooperative learning and using the communicative method of teaching grammar and a series of e-learning activities in the English language courses and seminars will enable the engineering students to develop their professional verbal and written communication for technical and business purposes in their future career in an online environment and in a company office. This paper will show that e-learning will have the following advantages: 1) motivating the students to take a professional approach to specialised communication in English for work purposes based on a series of real life examples of professional communication in an online and physical work environment; 2) facilitating their professional communication on the online platforms and in the seminar classrooms at university for accomplishing the given tasks for the English classes by offering them access to useful online resources including theoretical guidelines as well as models of written formal business and technical documents, and relevant feedback. | Keywords
